Happy July everyone! Anyone else drowning in school supplies every time you go to a store? That can only mean one thing–the school year is starting soon. I often feel like the start of the school year is a mad dash. In an effort to be proactive, I have created Literacy Centers for August! The activities are geared for Kindergarten, but could be used in first or even second grade classrooms depending on your students’ needs. Having literacy centers prepped and ready to go is one less thing you have to worry about with everything else going on!
There are 10 easy to prep centers to help you start your school year 🙂
Letter Sorting Mats
Letter identification is one of the first skills kinders master at the beginning of the year. These letter sorting mats help young learners identify letters and numbers. Eat mat comes with its own recording sheet!
School Words Write the Room
This activity promotes vocabulary and language acquisition in your young learners. All of the vocabulary words pertain to the beginning of school.
Magnifying Glass Letter Find
Your students will use a magnifying glass to find the small, hidden letters in the image. There are two differentiated recording sheets for this activity.
Syllable Sort: Pocket Chart Center
This game is intended to be played in a pocket chart. BUT if you don’t have access to a pocket chart, no worries! It can just as easily be spread out on a table to play. Or, you can stick magnets on the backs of the cards and voila! It’s a magnet center. It also comes with a recording sheet.
Rhyming Puzzles
This fun activity reinforces early phonemic awareness skills. Rhyming is an essential early literacy skill. These puzzles are a hands-on approach to help your kiddos practice rhyming.
Roll a Sight Word
I love dice games! For this game, you will need a differentiated learning cube (big foam cube with clear sleeves). Students roll a sight word, and record on the recording sheet. The rec. sheets are differentiated to meet the needs of your learners.
First Sounds Sort
This center is another fun sorting game! It can be used in a pocket chart center, magnet center, or your kids can simply lay the cards out on a flat surface to sort. There are two differentiated recording sheets for this game.
August Writing Center
This writing center helps students use school vocabulary in their writing. The story starters help them generate ideas if they are stuck.
